The Family Upstairs -Lisa Jewel #BookReview

I’ve finally completed reading this book 📚. I’m all types of feels because of how the book was written. Here’s the synopsis of the book as stated on GoodReads…

Synopsis:

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

The can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

Warning ⚠️ :If you’ve not read the book I suggest you stop here as I’m going to be dissecting the book and eventually spoilers will be mentioned.

The Family Upstairs -Lisa Jewel

My Thoughts:

The story is told of the main character Libby, 25 yr old who inherits her family home. She’s excited and looks forward to the scary and exciting journey. Libby learns that she has older “siblings” and her parents were apart of a “murder” “suicide”. All is still not clear so she works with the lead journalist Miller Roe who covered the story to find out what truly happened.

The story is told from three persons point of view:

Libby

Henry *brother

Lucy *no relation yet

Henry:

Henry a 12 yr old boy talks of his wealthy family and how he looks forward to going to a top private school. He lives with his mom dad and sister Lucy. Henry talks of his mom a budding socialite and dad a man who has inherited his family’s money. He later learns that his family is no longer rich soon after his mom takes in a family Birdie and Justin. Henry doesn’t like Birdie and he is puzzled because his mom allowed her and boyfriend to stay. Soon after another family comes David, Sally, Clemency, and Phin. His home has become crowded. Henry is obsessed with Phin. He’s in love. Henry grew closer to Justin a herbalist. He made different types of potions for ailments. It was not until Justin left Henry started doing his concoctions. Henry is very pissed with everything that is happening in his house, he’s now homeschooled with the other children, and living as a poor family thanks to David who was now in charge of the family’s finances.

Lucy:

To be honest I wasn’t sure where the story was going with Lucy. I was somewhat lost. Here’s what I gathered. A single mom of two kids Marco and Stella. She was once married to a wealthy man Micheal, he was very abusive and also happens to be Marcos Dad. Lucy did odd jobs playing her 🎻. She wasn’t stable she moved around a lot. It was not until she got a message notification that the baby was 25. Lucy must do everything she can to see the baby even if it meant committing murder?

The story started out slow but gradually developed and was a page-turner. It got spooky at one point but nothing you shouldn’t be able to handle. I was kind of disturbed about the alleged “Child Abuse” that was briefly mentioned. The circumstances around the alleged murder/suicide was cleared up, Libby gained new love and siblings. Henry is a whole character, they’re some points in the story where I felt bad for him but that little boy is the devil 😩😩. Y’all I was cursing him out. Henry’s mother I wanted to knock some sense into her, can she be any more stupid and gullible urgggggh. Henry’s dad was just there anything to make his wife happy.

This book also made me think how as parents we ought to consider how our actions affect children. Children have feelings too.

Save your Breath- Melinda Leigh(Morgan Dane Series Book 6) #Book-Review

Synopsis:

When true-crime writer Olivia Cruz disappears with no signs of foul play, her new boyfriend, Lincoln Sharp, suspects the worst. He knows she didn’t leave willingly and turns to attorney Morgan Dane and PI Lance Kruger to find her before it’s too late.

As they dig through Olivia’s life, they are shocked to discover a connection between her current book research on two cold murder cases and the suicide of one of Morgan’s prospective clients.

As Morgan and Lance investigate, the number of suspects grows, but time is running out to find Olivia alive. When danger comes knocking at their door, Morgan and Lance realize that they may be the killer’s next targets.

My Thoughts:

Bittersweet moment as I write my final thoughts on this novel as well as the series. So much emotions going on right now. Excellent writing by Melinda Leigh. She had me staying up late at night. I’m not mad at all.

Book 6 was centered around the kidnapping of Olivia Cruz, Sharps’s girlfriend. The kidnapping was all kind of weird that left Sharp desperate to find her. He of course got help from Morgan, Lance, Lance mom, and Stella (Morgans sister) to solve this one. Every clue they’d got turned up to be a dead end. Sharp was miserable he and Olivia hadn’t really established anything between them but he knew he was miserable without her and he just had to find her. I was sad for him.

So many leads, something had to give them a clue. Lance and Morgan saved the day they did not only solve the kidnapping but also other mysteries.

The ending was very touching Sharp did something that made Morgan tear up and to tell you the truth I was moved. He did something that would make your heart melt. I’m also happy that Lance and Morgan will be together forever.

Overall well written series, I thoroughly enjoyed the novels. Melinda Leigh has a new fan. I will be looking out for her books. If you see them please tag me.

What’s next? I’m going to finish reading my book of the month mail haul….

Secrets Never Die-Melinda Leigh (Morgan Dane Series Book#5) #BookReview

Synopsis:

When a retired sheriff’s deputy is shot to death in his home, his troubled teenage stepson, Evan, becomes the prime suspect. Even more incriminating, the boy disappeared from the scene of the crime.

Desperate to find her son, Evan’s mother begs PI Lance Kruger for help. She knows her son is innocent. Kruger and defense attorney Morgan Dane want to believe that too, but the evidence against the boy is damning. Just as the trail goes cold, another deputy vanishes. His shocking connection to Evan’s stepfather throws the investigation into chaos as Lance and Morgan fear the worst…that Evan is the killer’s new target.

With so many secrets to unravel, will Lance and Morgan find him before it’s too late?

My Thoughts:

I felt that the plot in this book took forever to come to fold. The suspense was still there, however. Morgan Dane and Lance got a very difficult case with lots of twists and turns, several secrets were unfolded, she continues to the same badass, defense attorney so much so to the detriment of colleagues she has to work with. The DA and Sheriff are not always pleased with how she continues to show up to their department’s shortcomings.

The characters are growing on me and I like the relationships that have developed over the series: Morgan and Lance, Sharp, and Olivia. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
