Debbie (A Short Story)

Strong-willed, headstrong, independent, thorough are just a few things that people used to describe her.

Deborah or “Deb” was a go-getter, tell it like it is and she knew exactly what she wanted. She was the town’s Seamstress and owned a small boutique store. She had everything except the ring on her finger.Every relationship ended because of heated disagreements. Her only friend Kacy was someone whom she had been friends with from high school. They weren’t always friends but with so many encounters and annoying similarities between the two, they became very good friends.

They lived in a small town where everyone knew each other’s names and nothing was ever a secret. Patty and and Karla were her neighbors, they looked out for her and were awesome babysitters for her two children Mia three (3) and Joshua five (5) years old .

Mother and Children –Family

It was a Thursday afternoon, in Dunkirk. She had just gotten in from work when she found the package on her porch. There was no return address and it was addressed to her. Fear, anxiety, washed her as she tried to figure out who could have sent her this strange package. The kids were with Patty and she got home earlier than expected, they’d be at the park so she figured she’d open it before she had any company.

She hurriedly went to the kitchen pulled out the package opener and there she saw in big bold letters….

Relationships aren’t One size fits All -#Blogmas Day 19

Social media is fun and “all men are trash”.

That’s not always the case. Social Media is not always fun and not all men are trash.

Relationships on Social Media are not perfect. Yes, they’re couples that you love seeing on your timeline and you feel a sense of attachment to. No couple that shares snippets of their “glowing” life the “couples goals” isn’t real. Those couples experience similar heartache that the ordinary person does. They’re just more open and better at putting together the experience to get you emotionally invested in their daily lives. This my friend is not healthy. Take these relationships with a grain of salt. Every other week there is one celebrity who is getting divorced and or breaking up.

” Relationships aren’t a one size fits all”.

Your relationship is unique to you. What works for your relationship may not work for mine. Also, people only share good things online; you have no idea what people are truly going through behind the scenes. It’s ok to cheer on the relationship but the moment you get invested that it affects you personally and your outlook on life, comparing your relationship to them; you need to take a step back.

Be deliberate with your relationships. If there is something that you feel that you can do to make it better talk to your partner but don’t hold the standards of your favorite celebrity couple against your partner who is truly trying. Newsflash maybe what you’re trying to do is just not for you. That’s okay, figure out what is and be happy with that.

Create your own life, his reality and their reality are two different worlds. Something like finances, for example, A joint account is not the answer to everything. The key is to have proper money management. Who is better at managing the finances in the relationship? That’s the person who should be responsible for that task. Have monthly check-ins just for transparency. If you need help with managing your finances here are Ten (10) Budgeting Tips to help you in your relationship.

Single at Christmas – Blogmas Day 14

It’s crazy how sometimes you feel as if things are just not going the way you want them to. You pay your bills on time, you take care of your family, water the plants, feed the cats. Somehow you are left to find yourself sitting down looking out in oblivion. Your innermost thoughts are trapped inside wanting to scream. You catch your breath, you wipe the tears, closing your eyes just wishing this feeling of hopelessness would go away.

Somebody anybody, when will it be my turn. You’re doing everything by the books, you pay your goddamn taxes, you have no tickets, you help your neighbor carry her groceries, but,you just can’t catch a break.

Sally* my friend decided to vent to me just now-Text message notification on my phone interrupted her thoughts –

” I miss you- JD”

Why now? It’s been (6) months after that messy breakup, the breakup of the century, breakup in a pandemic. We warned her but she didn’t listen, he is tall, athletic, has a successful business, the sex was great but; he had a bad temper. Things didn’t work out, he cheated on her.

Sally, is one of my closest friends and it has been a rough couple of months for her.

“I’m not going back there, nope. I’ve moved on. It has been a long and hard journey but I’m in a better place right now. I am up for a promotion at work and there’s no time to get caught up with great sex JD. “

Being single at Christmas time in a pandemic is different. There are days when she feels as if the world is going to end, days like today when she feels overwhelmed. She has to remind herself of the goal. She has a plan and she will stick to it. She’s now focused on things that were ignored in the past.

How do you cope at Christmas time as a single person?

Christmas Movies- Blogmas Day 6

Grab your blankets and your hot cocoas, egg nog, wine or coffee. Let’s talk about some of the movies that will definitely get you into the mood for Christmas. Netflix has some good ones that I’ve watched over and over again. The Princess Switch, Christmas Chronicles 1 & 2, Home Alone are really fun to watch.

These are some of my favorites:

1. Home A Lone (1,2&3)– funny and nostalgic home alone is bound to have you laughing in stitches. Kevin ( the main character) thinks of ways to prevent his home from being vandalized.

2. The Knight before Christmas.

A medieval knight is transported to the present day, where he falls for a high school science teacher who’s disillusioned by love.

3. A Wish for Christmas

Sara prefers to be on the sidelines at work until someone steals her big idea for a Christmas initiative. She makes a wish to Santa to gain the courage to stand up for herself, and he gives her 48 hours to discover how to speak her own mind.

4. The Princess Switch.

One week before Christmas, a duchess switches places with an ordinary woman from Chicago, who looks exactly like her, and they each fall in love with each other’s beaus.

5.Holiday Rush.

After being fired, a radio DJ moves in with his aunt, bringing along his four spoiled children.

6.The Grinch

The Grinch grows increasingly annoyed with the ever-growing festive cheer that engulfs the village of Whoville. So, he teams up with his dog to ruin the festive spirit by being a spoilsport.

7. The Christmas Chronicles

Siblings Kate and Teddy Pierce hatch a scheme to capture Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. When the plan goes awry, the kids join forces with a somewhat jolly Saint Nick and his loyal elves to save the holiday before it’s too late.

8.A Christmas Prince

Christmas comes early for an aspiring young journalist when she’s sent abroad to get the scoop on a dashing prince who’s poised to be king.

9.Almost Christmas

Walter invites his four dysfunctional children home for Christmas a year after their mother’s death and hopes they can set aside their problems for a nice, traditional holiday.

10.The Best man Holiday

When college friends reunite after 15 years over the Christmas holidays, they find out just how easy it is for long-forgotten enmities and romances to be rekindled.

Most if not all are on Netflix. Did you see any of your favorites? What are some must watch Christmas movie?

Giving Back – #Blogmas Day4

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Cues my Andy Williams voice .

One of the harshest realities that hit close to home is that not everyone is as fortune as I am to still have my day job with no loss in benefits. In true Christmas spirit amidst the hustle and bustle of getting the gifts and the whole shebang let us remember those persons who lost their jobs or suffered pay cuts during this pandemic.

I want you to consider the following in giving back. Christmas ,the true meaning is about giving love and sharing hope.

1. Give to your favourite Charities.

2. Prepare meals and give to the homeless.

3. Donate the things you no longer need.

4. Reach out to the nearest community centre or church and volunteer to help out at a soup kitchen.

5. When you’re going shopping pick up and extra item and put a care package for that neighbor or family who is trying to make ends meet.

6. Check in on that elderly person down the road. Not many people can be around their loved ones right now. ( remember Covid-19 protocols)

7. Check in on that family member/friend whom you may think has it all together. The truth is a lot of persons are overwhelmed with everything that is happening and it’s really the thought that counts.

8. Remember the child at the children’s home when you’re going toy shopping ; or you can donate the toys that your child no longer plays with.

What are some of the things we can do to give back this Christmas?

Let’s chat!
